Coal Mine Pizza is just what downtown Boca Raton needed. Yes, there have always some good restaurants in the area, but most had "special occasion" written all over their menu prices. But even if you've paid half a million for a condo, it's nice sometimes to not have to spend a bundle on dinner. It's not that Coal Mine is a hole in a wall. More than $700,000 was spent on its stylish yet comfortable renovation. As you no doubt figured out, the $12 small and $16 large pizzas are the specialties here. There are 10 specialty pizzas and I can heartily recommend the Amazing Artichoke, a combination of artichokes, Parmesan, Romano and mozzarella. Like every pizza here, the crust is crisp and almost cracker-like. I'm such a fan of crisp pizza crust that even here, I ask for an extra crispy pizza. I believe that when you pick up a piece of pizza, the skinny tip should stay crispy and not point downward. Coal Mine Pizza is a winner. |

| Pizza is be the main draw, but you may be pleasantly surprised with the rest of the menu. |

| Favorite Coal mine dishes include the balsamic coal-baked chicken wings, the Far East Crispy Shrimp, as well as the Tuscan salad with white beans, salami, tomato, artichokes and diced pecorino. There's also a fresh catch of the day, risotto of the day and a lasagna of the day. |

Coal Mine, with a full liquor bar and outdoor patio, was Ellman's pick for the gold. In the absence of rabe, we ordered a large sausage-arugula ($20) and a delicious Tuscan salad ($14, large) an ideally proportioned mix of romaine, white beans, salami, tomato, artichokes, and diced pecorino chopped into cubes and thoroughly not heavily coated in tart Italian dressing. Our pizza came puffing and steaming to our waiting rack, fresh raw leaves of arugula melting into the hot cheese. The thin, pleasantly sour crust had lots of textural things going on some toothsome, some pillowy, some airy, some dense, with lovely pockets and black holes and areas of crunch and oily bits a single slice as varied as a life well lived. Mozz and sauce melted together to make a uniform, dappled sea upon which tiny rounds of paper-thin sausage had been tossed like life preservers. The whole was happily olive-oily. Coal Mine makes a fantastic, authentic, New York-style pizza that ought to bliss out the crankiest snowbird |
